I think that's acceptable in publish0x, because they're paying for user activity. Their business is exposing users to their sponsors. Even if someone doesn't even read what they're tipping, they still get some exposure, so that is fine. I do it myself that way, but there's always that one post sparking my attention. Besides, tipping in p0x offers very small rewards compared to proof-of-stake models.

Steemit's still going strong and that has become a cesspool

Agreed, but it started because of that votebot bullshit witnesses allowed. If it starts ugly, it grows into a cesspool and cannot be fixed. It's still early for POB.

It's still early for POB.

It is and ultimately it starts and ends with the tone from the top. Stake is the only control lever we have after four years of Steemit/Hive. Prevention is much better than cure so I hope we don't devolved into how Steemit or some of the other tribes have become.
