Mira dropped her bag on the dusty floor as she stared at the terrible condition of the place that was once her home. She slowly walked in and couldn't stop reminiscing about the memories of her life in the cottage.
Her eyes were fixed on Mr. and Mrs. Alex's portrait covered with dust, she remembered the day the drawing was presented to them during their 40th wedding anniversary and every bit of memories that came back to her made her cry more.
Mira decided to check out the condition of the other parts of the cottage and she eventually got to her room where she lived with other girls many years ago.
There was cobweb everywhere so she went back to find a broom but she couldn't get any. She stepped out of the house for a moment and tried reaching the other kids raised by the couples with the hope of getting everyone together to rebuild the house but most of those she got in touch with didn't give any positive response while the majority of them were unreachable.
Mira was disappointed and felt terrible for staying too far away from her home.
She went to the sheriff's department to inform them about her intention of living in the house and the couple's lawyer was invited.
"Miss. Mira, I feel glad that at least one person among the kids raised by the couple has decided to check up on this place", the lawyer started the conversation and Mira apologized for not coming earlier.
The lawyer continued, "In the couple's will, the cottage can only be used for an orphanage home as it has always been".
"That's why I am here, I decided to abandon everything just to come and continue what Mr. and Mrs. Alex have lived for", Mira replied.
The conversation went on for some time and Mira got the right to continue using the house as a home for homeless kids.
She involved the government and was approved as well so she started cleaning the place.
Mira got volunteers in the area and the cleaning went well for her.
Days passed and Mira settled in well, she reached out to people but the turnover was low and it didn't take long before she got her first child at the home.
More came in and soon the increase started bothering her. She stayed up late several nights trying to figure out a way to keep the home running but her sleepless nights amounted to nothing.
One night, she left her room to check on the kids who were fast asleep and while returning, she saw a rat run into the late couple's room.
She moved around in the room trying to figure out where the rat was hiding but didn't find anything.
"Where could this thing be hiding?", she asked herself after a few minutes search.
Mira was about to leave the room when she heard the squeaking of more than one rat so she approached where the sound was coming from.
She stopped at the wall and could still hear the sound, it looks like it was coming from the other side of the wall.
Mira checks for a hole and found one. She peeped through the hole but it was dark and couldn't see anything.
"Could there be a room behind this wall?", she asked with confusion written all over her face.
She knocked on the wooden wall and it sounded like there was space behind.
"Where could the door be?", Mira whispered as she touched different points on the wall.
She didn't find any and thought probably she was over thinking. Mira relax her back on the wall feeling tired and surprisingly, she fell to the other side of the wall.
As predicted, it was a passageway. She didn't know what triggered the door to open but resting on the wall did the magic.
Mira took her phone from the floor and turned on the flashlight immediately.
She was scared at first but summoned the courage to walk down the passage. There was a room by the end of it and she decided to check what was there.
The room was empty except for a small box in one corner of the room. She went to open it and was shocked to find some gold bars.
There was a note in the box so she opened it and read.
"I have always hoped to have a child who will someday choose to run this home after we are gone but God didn't bless me with one. I can't impose the running of this home on any of the kids here because they have their dreams as well but if by chance someone decides to keep our dreams about this home alive, I hope they find this to help them".
Tears dropped from Mira's eyes, it's been over two decades but she still remembered Mr. Alex's handwriting clearly.
She moved the box to her room and that was the end of Mira's struggles with the kids.
Mira built a new home and school for the kids. She invested in other things for the sake of the kids and also reached out to homes like that in the country.
WOW, this is an interesting story. I'm glad Mira didn't let the legacy die. Even after leaving the cottage, she still came back and the rat was indeed like an angel directing Mira to where the letter was hidden. You did amazing work in putting this story together @george-dee .
Coming tells how much she didn't forget her root, not many see the need to always return to their root to do something of such but she did.
At the point when she thought that she made a wrong choice, something remarkable happened. The rat was indeed an angel.
That's very true. I enjoyed your story. Well-done.
Such a sweet tale about devotion and remembrance. Mira knows her duty and she carries it out with diligence. The thing, of course, is that in “real life” even the best plans don’t finance themselves. Mrs Alex, understood that if one of her former charges ever found it in their heart to come back and run the orphanage, they’d need money to do it. Wonderful that the funds fell into the exact right hands.
Mr Alex did a great thing to put the future of their legacy into consideration and it work. I am glad it fell into the right as well because without the help, Mira might find it difficult to carry on.
I'm very sure Mira will do a wonderful job to the children.
Getting that note from her father means a whole lot.
Yeah, she will and I am glad Mr Alex plan worked out well to help her fulfill the desire to carry on their legacy.
