Authenticity

in Proof of Brainlast month

We are the words that
we eat what we say when
we think we are right;
yet others serve us
a dish of bitter truth.
How we respond when
chewing it down shows,
without telling, the kind
person we be or not be.

Were we to remember our
manners and listen before
being heard, We'd learn
more and hurt less;
Yet our hands bolt up eager
to answer; though no question
hangs in the air—Pause—
you fool—and think
this one through
in patience and silence
hear who you are.

Yet maybe, the roar of blood
in my ears scares me to
report before I know
my true self. I think
I better chew on this a bit,
Lest I choke on this bitter pill.

That is how to open a piece of poetry. Damn.
A very enjoyable read and a pleasant taste of what you can bring to the table.

Thanks, I spent last night pencil in some ideas and I hit on "We are the words that
we eat" and felt there was something so very poetic in that turn of two common phrases in American English (e.g. "You are what you eat" and "You'll eat those words")

I can see what you did there. It ties in nicely with the central running theme. I'm assuming the "dish of bitter truth" is that kind of deceitful false niceness that some express in an attempt to portray themselves as authentic and genuine?

It's that and/or how you receive even the most compassionate truth but your mind was set against receiving it.

Very good to see a poem from the word of the week!

I totally agree with that. How much could we learn if we listened before we want to be heard? And now a days most people want to speak and be heard, or have so much to say about everything, but never stop to listen a little too.

Thanks for sharing! What a great poem!

I have been the words that I ate when I said I was right. I try not to make such bold claims anymore. Nice poem!
